Where Love Lives: Honoring Mothers & Caregivers

As we celebrate Mother’s Day this month, I find myself reflecting on the strength, care, and resilience of the mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers we have the privilege of serving.

Space matters. A thoughtfully designed, trauma-informed room has the power to restore dignity, offer comfort, and create a sense of stability during times of uncertainty.

For the mothers in our partner shelters, that impact is deeply felt. One shared with us:

“Thank you so much for all that you have done in transforming our room into a space of comfort and beauty. It helps make this phase in our lives a little easier to bear.”

And in those first moments when families walk into their transformed space, it is often the children who show us exactly what that change means. Big smiles, running to their beds for the first time and lighting up as they take in all the special touches, favorite colors, toys, books, and art, designed just for them.

Another mom told us:

“I cried when I saw it because it made my heart burst with joy. I just knew my kids would be overjoyed. When they saw it, they had big smiles from ear to ear. They hugged me and said, ‘Mommy, we love it, we love it.’ I have noticed a big change in how they feel in our room now.”

These moments are a powerful reminder that what we create is more than a beautiful space. It is a foundation for healing, for rest, and for hope for both mothers and their children.

Because of this community, we have already transformed more than 46 rooms and multiple shared spaces so far this year, each one designed with care and intention for the families who call them home, even if only for a moment in their journey.

To every mother and caregiver, in every form, thank you. Your love shapes lives in ways both seen and unseen. We are honored to do this work alongside you.

Catherine's House, Charlotte

This project reflects the impact of creating spaces that support women and families during times of transition. Led by our Charlotte leaders Dawn Milgrom, Mary Beth Townley, and Julie Kavanagh, volunteers came together to support the completion of 15 guest rooms.

Each room was designed with families in mind, with thoughtful touches for children and details that help the space feel more welcoming and lived in. These rooms now offer a sense of comfort and stability for the women and children who stay there. This work was recently recognized with the Mercy in Action Award, honoring the impact of creating spaces where healing and belonging can begin.

Families Moving Forward, Durham

This room makeover is a beautiful example of mothers giving back to support other mothers and their families. Led by our Team Lead Jennifer Galloway, the space was brought to life by a mother volunteering with her two daughters and their friend.

Designed with the mom’s special request in mind, purple and lions, the room came together with care and intention. Backpacks placed at the end of the bunks, toiletries organized on the dresser, and artwork created just for the family, along with thoughtful touches for the children, helped make the space feel more personal and supportive.
